Located in the center of historic downtown Conway, the Trestle bakery and cafe are two local favorites—and for good reason.
When locals say they're going to Trestle, it means one of two things. They are either headed to the Bakery for some delectable sweets or they're off to the Cafe for some equally delicious breakfast or lunch. The two spots are located just a few buildings down from each other on Main Street and both warrant a visit.
Trestle's website touts amazing Southern food, generous portions, and reasonable prices. That's all true, but there's also a distinctive charm and magic to this establishment. Skyela says it looks like a "homey yard sale" inside the brightly lit Cafe which is lined with antiques. It's warm, inviting, and all the things a Southern restaurant should be.
There's also a fabulous outdoor dining area next to the restaurant which makes for great people watching along Main Street while you eat.
The first thing we need to talk about is the bread! Trestle's sourdough bread made fresh daily is served with nearly every dish and for good reason. We pick up a loaf or two (ordering ahead is a must!) for every major holiday to make the best French toast on the planet. And the good news is you can get this bread at the Bakery or Cafe.
A sliced loaf is $5.50 and an unsliced loaf is $5. You can also order a dozen dinner rolls for $8.99.
What's for breakfast
At the Cafe, you can actually order French toast along with pancakes, omelets, and breakfast sandwiches, croissants, and bagels. The breakfast plate special is only $6.25 and includes grits, two eggs, your choice of bacon, ham, or sausage, and sourdough toast.
If you're looking to satisfy your sweet tooth for breakfast, grab a donut and coffee from the Bakery. You can get a dozen gourmet chocolate donuts for $14.99, so move over Dunkin. There is also a variety of muffins, danishes, scones, sticky buns, and more. A huge favorite is the cinnamon roll for only $2.99.
What's for lunch
Trestle Cafe boasts a lovely lineup of sandwiches from the tuna melt to piled up grilled cheese to the reuben to a chicken BLT. Our favorite is the open face roast beef ($9.50) topped with brown mushroom and onion gravy and smothered in melted Swiss.
The club sandwich ($9.25) is a great option to split thanks to the towers of ham, turkey, roast beef, Swiss & American cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, and bacon.
The chunky chicken salad ($6.99 for the sandwich, $8.50 for the plate) is a must, but we actually prefer the fruited chicken salad that features a fresh mix of pecans, grapes, and mandarin oranges.
There really is something for everyone with specialty plates that range from chicken tenders to Cajun chicken to a seafood salad plate that includes shrimp, crab, pasta, bacon, and celery. You can also grab a salad sampler ($9.50) to try the seafood pasta, chunky chicken salad, and fruited chicken salad.
And we have to talk about the fried green tomatoes. If you haven't had this dish before, this is the perfect place to try them. If you have, you will be coming back for more once you've tried Trestle's rendition.
The Cafe serves breakfast on Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. and Saturday from 7 - 11 a.m. Lunch is served on Monday -Friday from 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. The Bakery is open on Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The Bottom Line
Trestle is a must-do whether you live in downtown Conway or are just passing through. It's cozy, charming, and quintessentially Southern. The staples on the menu will keep you coming back, but each time you try something new it's always a hit. Just make sure to save some room for the red velvet cake!
